MARY BETH KEMPER PERRYSBURG Ñ In this Thursday, Feb. 4 photo, Alec Gaston, 16, center, a junior at Perrysburg High School, one of three students spending the class day using a wheelchair, sit in his English class unable to fit the chair under a desk. (AP Photo/The Blade, Jetta Fraser) Bellevue Woodcarvers held their annual show for the public on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 6-7, at the VFW Hall. Although there were about 70 tables of displays by carvers from around Ohio, southern Michigan and Indiana, the weather on Saturday kept crowds to a minimum. Sunday, however, was a different story as several hundred people took advantage of the bright sunny skies to look over the tables of beautifully carved wares. (Gazette photos by Sally Boyd) Mike Allen, of Bellevue, has found a way to take his mind off work. A gift of a woodcarving class from his wife triggered a love of carving. Allen, who carves intricately detailed pieces - many with a Victorian look, was one of about 70 carvers displaying their wares over the weekend at the big woodcarving show at the VFW Hall.

Over 140 second grade students at Ridge Elementary earned rewards for reading recently. Students at Ridge participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. Students earn points for reading books and passing quizzes based on comprehension of the story. These four students were the top readers for the first half of the school year, left to right, Julia Ochenduski, 59 books; Ella Little, 48 books; Madison Lindsay, 56 books; and Kalub Walters, 47 books. The next incentive will be the February Read & Rock! Students need to read at least eight books for the month to earn an afternoon of dancing and fun. (Contributed photo)
Twenty-three Bellevue Senior High School students were recently selected to participate in OMEA's annual District II Honors Music Festival held on Jan. 16. Participating were, front row, left to right, Kris Hemeyer, Emily Wallingford, Lindsey Yantz, Angela Yingling, Kelsey Yantz, Shelby Oney, Catherine Wilson; middle row, from left, Cassie Fearing, Ellen Hoy, Jimmy Seliga, Shaun Hopton, Leah Fisher, Salli Feick, Tony Harper, Zach Orwig; and back row, Courtney Eads, Steve Morsher, Danielle Thornsberry, Josh Arnett, Hailey Tyree, Elizabeth Smith, Beth Cmar, and Brian Wilson. To be selected for the honor group, the students were required to make an audition tape which was then adjudicated by area directors. Dr. Birch Browning of Cleveland State University was the guest conductor for the honors band and Mr. Charles Snyder was the guest conductor for the honors choir. After a da'ys worth of hard work and practice, the students performed a concert that evening. (Contributed photo) While we didn't have a white Christmas, Mother Nature did provide us with the first significant snowfall of the winter on Sunday and Monday. Of course, that meant hitting the hill at the Magdalene Aigler Community Recreation Complex... for those youngsters who could tear themselves away from their video games and get some fresh air and exercise! Having fun in the snow Monday were Shana Kaufman, Brooke Taylor, Hannah DeBlase and Kristen Wooten. (Gazette photo by Danielle Orr) While the blowing and drifting snow made roads tricky Monday, it was perfect for sledding at the hill at the Community Center. (Gazette photo by Danielle Orr)
